![]() We also see various characters get shy around the camera or try and fix their appearance when seeing it, and this carries on the realistic feeling. Also, the way in which various characters react to the pseudo-documentary format – for example, at one moment we see Pablo put his camera down at one moment, and a young girl play with it – also feels very real. There are numerous moments of the characters talking about often trivial and superficial things, and this adds to the realistic feeling. This is also influenced by the various small details that the writers-directors, Jaume Balaguero and Paco Blaza employ to make it feel more real. Although, it has been done to death over the years, when done well and done right, it can be very effective because it just make the whole situation feel very relatable and real. ![]() The film really succeeds because it feels very real and raw, and that has always been the biggest charm of found-footage genre. As, Angela, Paulo and all the other residents discover that the building has been sealed off to avoid an outbreak, they all attempt to escape, alive. As they get there and we are introduced to the complex’s residents and other police, it is revealed that the complex has been part of an onslaught of a mysterious illness that is turning all the infected residents rabid. After a while of being bored, Angela and Pablo accompany two firefighters to a building complex after they get a call from a old woman who is trapped in her apartment. Rec centres on Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), a reporter and her cameraman, Pablo (Pablo Rosso) who are doing a report on a group of local firefighters. Rec is often called one of the best and most loved of its genre. Other examples include The Blair Witch Project (1996), often called the first proper example, Paranormal Activity (2007), Cloverfield (2008), and Lake Mungo (2010). Rec is a pivotal example of the found-footage horror genre, one of the most famous sub-genres inside the horror genre. Īfter reviewing the older horror classic, 1961’s The Innocents last week, I returned to reviewing more modern horror movies this week, with 2007’s. It is one of the best modern zombie films & a showcase of how to do found-footage correctly. This 2020, every Tuesday I will reviewing a horror film, and this week we have 2007’s. If you’ve not seen Rec then make sure you watch it. The finale is thrilling & while it doesn’t sequel-bait it leaves plenty of room for further films (which there would be). Tense from beginning to end, Rec is a horror where you will slowly lose all hope. The acting is solid from everyone, being a Spanish horror film there could be the possibility of nuances getting lost in translation but that isn’t the case here. The shaky camera work, the darkened scenes, the close-ups…it all makes sense in relation to what is happening in the apartment block. At this stage found-footage wasn’t the albatross it would become & while many of the more frustrating elements about it are present here, it rarely detracts from the enjoyment. One that is terrifying & effective even though it isn’t doing anything new. Seeing a chance to get a real story, Ángela starts to interview residents but things take an even darker turn when whatever affected the old woman begins to spread. Panic ensures as a loudspeaker informs them that they are quarantined while a potential contagion is investigated. They manage to subdue her & attempt to get the injured officer out only to discover that they have been locked in by the military. When they go into her apartment though, she attacks one of the police officers biting him on the neck. Once there they meet some of the residents who are upset & worried about the woman. They head off to investigate with Ángela and cameraman in tow. ![]() The firehouse gets a call about an elderly woman who is trapped in her apartment and screaming. Two of the most likeable characters in a modern zombie movie. It’s also where we’re introduced to the firemen, Álex (David Vert) and Manu (Ferrán Terraza). It’s here we get to know Ángela and see just how driven she is. Rec begins with reporter Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) & her cameraman covering the night shift in one of Barcelona’s local fire stations for the documentary television series While You’re Sleeping. One such film was Rec, a zombie, found-footage horror.Ĭo-written and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, Rec is a 2007 Spanish horror film that was so successful it saw a ‘shot for shot’ American remake called Quarantine a year later. Every so often a horror movie comes along that utilises many of the standard horror tropes but does it so well, it rises above the murky depths.
